Kanchan Desai nee Kapoor was born in Bombay in 1961.  She studied at Walcingham School in Bombay and at the time of her marriage in 1982 was doing her B.A. Final Honours at the Sophia College, but did not sit for her exams.

She is married to Ketan Desai, son of the most famous Producer and Director in Indian Cinema, the late Manmohan Desai. They have two children, Pooja and Rajeshwari.
