My First Rendezvous with 'Babaji'

Watch the full video for the full story.

Last time, I told you how I wasn't quite convinced by what others said about Babaji. But today, I want to share the story of how I actually got to meet him.

It was 1972. Babaji was in Bombay, staying with some devotees. My in-laws, my wife, and my children had all gone to meet him, and they invited him to their home. To everyone's delight, he agreed to visit at 4:00 PM on a specific day.

My wife was adamant. She said, "Please try, at least make an effort to be there."

I told her, "I am shooting that day. I am shooting for 'Parvarish' (I think it was), and we have Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna, and myself on set. The director isn't going to just let me go to meet a Baba."

And that is exactly what happened. When I asked, the answer was a firm "No way." It was a big shoot with a top star cast, and I couldn't leave. I called my wife at 1:30 PM during the lunch break and told her, "Sorry, I can't come."

But then, something most uncanny happened.

Shortly after lunch, the director came to me. He looked shaken. He told me that his mother-in-law, who had been in a coma for six months, had just passed away. I expressed my condolences, but then he looked at me and said, "So, you bloody fool, you go and meet your Baba. Shooting is cancelled."

And that is how fate intervened. At 4:00 PM sharp, I was at my father-in-law's house.

The room was packed with 200 to 300 devotees, and there was Babaji, sitting on a takat, smiling away. My wife introduced me, and I did the traditional pranam. Then, I retreated behind a window. From there, I started taking pictures of him. I zoomed in and clicked away, capturing frame after frame.

But then, all of a sudden, I noticed something. Babaji was looking right at me. It felt as if he had zoomed in on me, and he was the one taking my picture, my X-ray, layer by layer.

I have no explanation for that moment. When people asked me later how I found him, I said, "He is a very fine human being, very young." But deep down, I knew... he had kept taking my X-ray.

The content on this site was originally created in the late 1990s by Shammi Kapoor himself and has been preserved in its original form to retain its authenticity. The redesign you see here was completed before Shammiji’s passing. Over time, different layouts and fonts were experimented with for comparison, and we continue to share those versions. Some additional sections like VIDEOS and CINEMA OF INDIA have been added for revenue generation for self-sustaining the website financially for hosting and domain as advised by Mr. Shammi Kapoor.

Every element of this site including the banners, images and font were personally chosen by Shammi Kapoor himself. He decided to update the original design when it became incompatible with newer devices and screen resolutions.
